Geotechnics has extensive New Zealand and overseas experience in the establishment and operation of project dedicated testing laboratories. Since our formation, we have set up and maintained numerous site testing facilities on some of the larger civil engineering projects throughout New Zealand, Asia and the Pacific. Many of these projects have been of a complex nature where our depth of experience has been advantageous in dealing with the diverse range of site conditions often encountered in this part of the world. Projects to which we have provided these services include oil refineries, gold mines, hydro electric schemes, dams, tunnels and roading projects.

Papakura District Council Pavement Rehabilitation Investigations

Northern Gateway Alliance Project


Location: Northern Gateway Toll Road, SH1, Auckland

Services:The Northern Gateway project is the four laning from Silverdale to Puhoi of State Highway 1. The section also known as ALPURT B2, is a 7.5km toll road through ecologically significant and environmentally sensitive areas. The project consisted of three viaducts, a bridge and tunnels.

Geotechnics assisted with the establishment of the laboratory facilities including the provision of testing equipment and instrumentation. We provided a Laboratory Manager who developed the Management System and gained accreditation status with IANZ. We also trained Northern Gateway Alliance laboratory staff in construction testing. Our Auckland based team provided Benkelman Beam and in-situ CBR testing and profilometer monitoring services during construction.


Auckland City Council Area Wide Pavement Treatments And Road Rehabilitation

Construction of Auckland Airport's New Northern Runway - Stage I


Location: Auckland International Airport, Auckland
Client/Owner: Auckland International Airport Ltd.

Duration: Two years
Services: The new runway is parallel to and north of the existing runway. It is being developed in stages to be 2,150 metres long. Stage I is 1,200 metres long and due for completion in late 2010, in time for the Rugby World Cup in New Zealand. Smaller, slower aircraft will be shifted to the Northern runway, enabling better use of the existing runway and aprons for larger aircraft.
Our role is the earthworks quality control testing. We have technicians on site during the construction season performing density tests and ultimately up to 7,500 dynamic cone penetrometer (DCP) scala tests over the duration of the project. We also monitor construction settlement and pore pressure with geotechnical instrumentation.  We have installed and are monitoring 2.4km of settlement tubing and 16 vibrating wire piezometers.


Traffic Control For National Falling Weight Deflectometer Survey

Services:The NZTA is responsible for the development and maintenance of the national state roading network.  The Falling Weight Deflectometer (FWD) survey is an integral part of the asset management information.

Our role is to provide and co-ordinate the traffic control for the FWD survey which involves Level 1 through Level 3.


Shell Lyttelton Tank Development Stage One




Location: Lyttelton, Christchurch

Shell Oil Services decided to upgrade petroleum storage tanks at their Lyttelton Site that will result in the development of three new storage tanks. Geotechnics won the contract to install geotechnical instrumentation below the tanks foundations.

The project was run out of the Geotechnics Wellington office with supervision from the Geotechnics Tauranga office. In total, ten vibration wire (VW) piezometers and six profilometer pipes will have been installed by the end of the project. Two tank foundations have been completed. Each tank site contains one deep (19m) and one shallow (5m) VW Piezometer. Two Profilometer pipes were laid perpendicular to each other at the surface of the foundation. The combination of the data from both the VW Piezometers and Profilometers will allow the authorities to accurately monitor tank settlement during the construction and hydro testing phases.


Wellington Inner City Bypass Project


Location: Wellington, New Zealand

Duration: Two and a half years
Services: This project involves the construction of a two lane road that will reduce traffic levels in the central business district. Geotechnics has primarily been involved with monitoring the stability of a large trench structure that forms part of the bypass. We were able to provide the requested instrumentation, install it and provide ongoing monitoring services. Instrumentation included inclinometers and vibrating wire and open stand-pipe piezometers.


Manapouri Second Tailrace Tunnel


Location: Fiordland, New Zealand
Client / Owner: Meridian Energy
Contractor: Fletcher Dillingham Ilbau J.V.
Duration: Five Years
Services: Establishment of an on site (IANZ accredited) laboratory to provide an independent testing service to this 10km tailrace tunnel project. The site facility catered for the testing of a wide range of materials including concrete, shotcrete, rockbolts, aggregates, grout, soils and water. Other activities included instrumentation installation and monitoring (piezometers, inclinometers, etc) and environmental testing and monitoring. Geotechnics supplied all testing equipment and instrumentation and were responsible for equipment commissioning and ongoing operation.


Kinleith Paper Mill – Modernisation Project


Location: Tokoroa, New Zealand
Client / Owner: Carter Holt Harvey

Duration: Three Years
Services: Geotechnics were awarded the contract to provide testing services for this modernisation project. Work involved site and laboratory testing for all civil works including foundations, roading, concrete, earthworks and steel placement. Other services to this project comprised supervision and testing (flexural tensile determination) of large areas of industrial grade block pavers.


Martha Hill Gold Mine


Location: Waihi, New Zealand
Client / Owner: Waihi Gold / Normandy Mining Ltd
Contractor: McMahon Contractors
Duration: Three Years + ongoing
Services: Contracted as an ITA (Independent Testing Authority) to provide on site testing services for the tailings embankment and other civil works. Initial services involved the establishment of an IANZ accredited site testing laboratory, together with associated quality assurance and quality control systems and documentation. Ongoing services include geotechnical instrumentation installation and monitoring, contractor supervision and testing and test data compilation and reporting.


Golden Cross Gold Mine


Location: Waihi, New Zealand
Client / Owner: Cyprus Minerals and Coeur d/Alene Mines Inc.

Duration: Eleven Years (2yrs development, 9yrs operations and closure)
Services: Geotechnics were awarded the contract to establish and operate a project laboratory for all civil works associated with the development and ongoing operation of this gold mine. While at the height of construction, the site team comprised seven personnel involved in testing and monitoring activities. Other inputs to the project were the supply, installation and monitoring of geotechnical instrumentation (piezometers, inclinometers, extensometers, etc) and site based environmental testing.


Marsden Point Refinery Expansion Project


Location: Whangarei, New Zealand
Client / Owner: NZ Refining Company
Contractor: J.V. II / (Downers/Fletchers/McConnell Dowell)
Duration: Three Years
Services: Establishment and operation of an accredited laboratory to provide onsite testing services for all engineering materials used on this project. Duties included quality system development and documentation and the testing of concrete, soils, foundations, aggregates, grout, masonry, water and refractory materials. During very active construction programmes the site team expanded to as many as twenty engineers and technicians.


Opuha Dam


Location: Fairlie, New Zealand
Client / Owner: Opuha Dam Company
Contractor: Doug Hood Ltd
Duration: Three Years
Services: Geotechnics provided all onsite testing services to this irrigation / hydro dam project. Three technicians were employed on site and a site laboratory was established to cater for soil, concrete and aggregate testing, together with site supervision and instrumentation installation and monitoring.


Redvale Landfill


Location: Auckland, New Zealand

Duration: Nine Years (1yr development, 8yrs operations)
Services: Geotechnics were awarded the contract to establish an on site testing laboratory and write the quality plan for the start up phase of this project. Primary services catered for lab and field soils and earthworks testing and water quality analysis. Since start up (for the past 8 years), Geotechnics has been providing on site testing services associated with the landfill liner construction. Other work on site has included dust monitoring and inclinometer supply, installation and monitoring.


Clyde Dam


Location: Alexandra, New Zealand

Duration: One Year
Services: Senior Geotechnics staff were seconded to this one million m3 concrete gravity dam project in trouble shooting and technical assistance roles. Services were provided over a twelve month period and included the development of a reliable quality control system for concrete testing, trouble shooting for the contractor and liaison with the client and the design engineers.


Route PJK Roading Project


Location: Tauranga, New Zealand
Client / Owner: Transit NZ / Tauranga District Council
Contractor: Fulton Hogan McConnell Smith J.V.
Duration: Three Years
Services: Geotechnics won the contract to provide all instrumentation services to this $90 million roading project. Services included the supply, installation and ongoing monitoring of geotechnical instrumentation (20 x profilometers, 60 x pneumatic piezometers, 12 x inclinometers, 20 x settlement cells, 20 x casagrande piezometers). Other inputs were the development and maintenance of an instrumentation database and laboratory and field testing of foundations and pavements.


Nam Song Diversion Project


Location: Nam Song, Laos, P.D.R.

Duration: Fourteen months
Services: Geotechnics provided a laboratory manager to this project to establish an on site testing facility for the quality control of construction activities. Duties included the documentation of a quality system, equipment procurement and commissioning, staff training and day to day laboratory operation and reporting / liaison with the engineer.


Komarindi Hydro Electric Project


Location: Honiara, Solomon Islands
Client / Owner: Solomon Islands Electricity Authority (ADB funded)

Services: Geotechnics involvement with this project was to provide field staff for the initial investigations associated with feasibility.  This work involved the mobilisation of staff to a very remote area with extremely difficult access and set up a site camp from which to operate.  Fieldwork included topography survey and comprehensive engineering geological investigations comprising drilling rig establishment (helicopter), insitu and field testing and a major laboratory testing programme.


Lefaga Bay Expressway


Location: Upolu, Samoa
Client / Owner: Samoan Government (ADB funded)

Duration: 6 months
Services: Geotechnics provided technical assistance to this roading project in the form of a field engineer to manage the on site laboratory. Duties included liaison with the engineer, training of local staff, field and laboratory testing and reporting.


Federal Highways Rehabilitation Project

Services: Stage one of this project was awarded to Geotechnics and consisted of the detailed condition evaluation of 450km of existing federal highway throughout Malaysia. Project services comprised pavement condition evaluation including visual assessment, road roughness, skid resistance and non-destructive falling weight deflectometer testing. Other services include core recovery and DCP testing, test pits and field CBR, resilient


Sultanah Aminah Hospital Refurbishment


Location: Johor Bahru, Malaysia

Duration: 6 months
Services: Geotechnics were responsible for the site investigation and associated foundation testing and condition analysis for this hospital refurbishment project. Work involved the establishment of equipment and staff on site, supervision of drilling rigs, core logging and sampling and performing insitu down hole testing (pressuremeter, geophysical logging, cone penetrometer etc). Other work included the testing of piles for condition and length by geophysical and induction methods and conducting an extensive laboratory testing programme and reporting.


Besut Flood Mitigation Project


Location: Besut, Malaysia

Services: Geotechnics were responsible for the setting up and operation of an extensive geotechnical investigation to determine the pile and foundation condition of several bridges within the flood plain. Other work included investigations for river bank protection works, insitu pressuremeter and geophysical testing, bridge pile length testing and the compilation of test data and reporting.
