Soils / Triaxial Testing Technician
Ready to get hands-on and build your career in testing?
We’re on the lookout for an intermediate-level Technician to join our Onehunga-based team. If you’ve got experience in Triaxial Testing (or similar) and want to take the next step, this is a great opportunity to grow and develop in a supportive, fast-paced environment.
You’ll be working in the lab delivering accurate, high-quality testing that plays a key role in our projects — no two days are quite the same.
This role is practical and active, so you’ll need to be comfortable rolling up your sleeves. Flexibility is important too, with early starts, late finishes, and occasional overtime part of the job.
What You’ll Bring:
- Qualifications: Ideally you will have a degree or diploma in Geography, Geology, Earth Sciences, Physical Science, Electronics, Mechanical, Mechatronics, Physics or similar.
- Experience: Typically 2-5 years in a geotechnical or civil engineering laboratory, but we will consider less.
- Capability: Ability to lift items weighing up to 15kg on a regular basis.
- Practical Skills: Experience with basic hand tools, and repair and maintenance of equipment.
Technical Skills
- Triaxial Testing: This is the core skill. The technician should be able to operate triaxial testing apparatus, prepare soil and rock samples for testing, conduct the tests according to set procedures, and collect and record data.
- Data Analysis: The ability to analyse the test data, interpret results and generate reports is important.
- Familiarity with Geotechnical Software: Experience with specialised software to analyse data and generate reports.
- Knowledge of Health and Safety Protocols: Working in a lab environment requires following safety protocols for handling equipment and potentially hazardous materials like soil samples.
Essential Skills
- Accuracy and Attention to Detail: Triaxial testing involves careful sample handling and assessment, precise measurements and following procedures meticulously with a low error rate.
- Neat, Tidy and Well Organised: These attributes ensure an organised, efficient and safe laboratory.
- Problem-Solving Skills: The technician will need to troubleshoot equipment malfunctions or unexpected test results and determine the cause.
- Teaching: Competent in teaching technical, quality and efficient work skills to junior technicians.
- Communication Skills: Being able to communicate information and test results clearly in written reports and verbally to junior employees, peers and engineers is important.
- Teamwork: Collaboration with the team leader and other lab technicians is essential.
- Leading by Example: Ability to motivate with enthusiasm and empathy, bringing positive energy, uplifting others, and inspiring the team to work together toward shared goals.
- Quality: Contribute to continuous improvement of our testing offering.
Other Desirable Attributes
- Understanding of Soil Mechanics: A basic understanding of soil mechanics theory, geotechnical materials, civil engineering applications and how the principles of triaxial testing are applied.
- Computer Literacy: Excellent digital and data skills when using computers, spreadsheets and lab-specific software.
- Quick Learner: Willingness and ability to pick up new skills and knowledge quickly.
