SH20 Waterview Connection
When construction began in January 2012, the Waterview Connection project in Auckland was New Zealand’s largest, and most ambitious roading project. Completing the Western Wing Route around the city, the project connected Auckland's northwestern and southwestern motorways. The 5km stretch of multi-lane motorway includes twin tunnels constructed using the world's 10th largest tunnel boring machine. Each tunnel is 2.4km in length, 14.5m in diameter and built to carry three lanes of traffic.
Our role in the project involved the supply, installation and monitoring of all geotechnical and structural instrumentation (including vibrating wire piezometers, hydrostatic profile gauges, inclinometers, strain gauges, rod extensometers and load cells).
Our involvement also included Cross-hole Sonic logging of piles for the Great North Road Interchange as well as the provision of field and laboratory construction materials testing testing of over-burden material, sewer backfill, bridge abutments, subgrade, subbase, base course, rock, concrete, shotcrete and grout.
